The 500 gig MyBook external hard drive used a maximum of 32 watts when you first plug it in. The hard drive actually automatically spins down after about 10 minutes of inactivity, and when that happens it uses up 3 watts. When it's doing some copying it used up 14 watts, and when "idle" it used up 13 watts.

I would recommend that the drive be physically powered off unless you use it often because it does use up 3 watts even with the hard disk shut off.
