This is a solid monitor that does 1600x1200. The one measured here is the black one (PL201M-BK). It's a bit old now but still does a great job and is a testament to the quality of Planar monitors. All tests below were done at roughly 80% contrast level:

-at 50% brightness: 43 watts
-at 100% brightness: 52 watts
-at 0% brightness: 20 watts
-with black blank screen as screensaver on: 17 watts at 0% brightness
-in power save mode (orange power light): 1 watt

Mostly I run it at 25% brightness (uses 25 watts). By not running your LCD monitor at high brightness levels you are not only saving energy but you're also lengthening the life of the backlight bulb of the monitor itself.

I can definitely live with the power save mode of 1 watt. You should set in in your OS to shut it off after a certain time in case you accidentally leave it on. But usually I turn off the monitor completely anyways via the power button.
